The 1990 Jaguar XJ6 was one of the successful models created by Jaguar’s automobile company. It was similar to its predecessor, but had noticeable changes in physical dimensions. It was a successful model and later Jaguar had taken this as a model for its future generation XJ6 cars, which were manufactured after 1990. It was also produced in elegant Vanden Plas trim level.

1990 Jaguar XJ6 Performance: Engine & Transmission

The standard substantial features in the 1990 Jaguar XJ6 were: a powertrain with 4.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, which could produce 175 hp at 1,500 rotations per minute and 300 lb-ft torque at 4,500 rpm. The engine was mated to 4-speed automatic transmission.

The 1990 Jaguar XJ6 was designed with 4-door and 113-inch wheelbase just like 1988 XJ6 & 1989 Jaguar XJ6 models. The modified physical dimensions were in comparison with the earlier one, it was 9.3 inches wider, 3.2 inches shorter, and 1.5 inches taller. Also it had both front as well as rear-wheel drive.

1990 jaguar xj6

Additional Features & Comfort

The additional features of the 1990 Jaguar XJ6 were 4-wheel-disc antilock brakes, manual lap belts, and powered front shoulder belts. It was included with the entertainment features such as CD/DVD player, and FM/AM recorder.

Talking about comfort and convenience, the 1990 Jaguar XJ6 had improved acceleration, smooth, and calm drive. But, it was very expensive and had a poor fuel economy.

The 1987 Jaguar XJ6 was designed on similar lines of its predecessor’s styling and assembled with high quality body parts including a new drive train, and conventional antilock brakes. It was designed with 3.2 liter AJ6 engine, mated to a 4-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Exclusive Features in 1987 Jaguar Xj6

1987 XJ was featured with an exclusive “J-gate” selector that provided the physical override capability. Despite the fact that it was no-noise and smooth-riding wagon, it rendered a small amount of power and also torque. So, the future model, which was designed during 1990, was incorporated with a 4.0 liter engine that could churn out greater power as well as torque.

Physical Dimensions & Pricing

The overall length of the 1987 Jaguar XJ6 was 196.4 inches long and it had a wheelbase of 113.0 inches. Its total weight was 3,905-4,015 pounds. Looking at its safety features, an ABS breaking system was deployed in the 1987 Jaguar Xj6, but it had a little congested passenger room, and the downside of high cost.

1987 Jaguar Xj6

The 1987 Jaguar Xj6 was a saloon that did not vow the buyers because of its very high price, though it attracted the high end consumers with its advanced features. It was priced around $43,500-59,400, and the 1987 Jaguar Xj6 failed to prove to be a popular sports car.

Engine & Performance

The 5.3 liter 12-cylinder and 3.2 liter 6-cylinder engines punched in 156 hp of power and 300 lbs of torque, which was quite impressive during its era. It was mated to 4-speed automatic transmission incorporated with Bosch fuel injection. Coming to its length, it was about 191.7 inches longer and it had a wheelbase of 113.0 inches.

1986 Jaguar XJ6

The 1986 Jaguar XJ6 was a bit heavy, weighing about 3,860-4,065 pounds. However, its price was on the higher side ranging from $25,000 to $40,100 in U.S.

Changes in 1986 Jaguar XJ6

Coming to the case of external body appearance, the 1986 Jaguar XJ6 had thick rubber bumpers with attractive chrome mounted on the top edge, door handles for enhanced safety, a fence with vertical vanes, and modified roofline along with shallower glass region.

What’s more, the 1986 Jaguar XJ6 had leather interior, audio system, electric sunroof, antennas, adaptive cruise control, back window defogger, and dual climate control.

The 1983 Jaguar XJ6 was just like a basic model for the XJ6 series, manufactured during 1983. When compared with present generation Jaguar models, it did not have too many features. It was featured in a special exterior trim painted in tan color and cream colored interior trims. It was a 4-door saloon marketed at a reasonable price of about $5,875.

1983 Jaguar XJ6

Mechanical Features

Taking a look at its mechanical design; it was deployed with 4.2L engine with six cylinders that could evolve 210hp of power matched with 3-Speed Automatic transmission. It had rear wheel drive. Due to presence of power mechanical parts, but lack of technology, it gave a poor gas mileage of about 15 mpg within city and 21 mpg on highways.

Advanced Features

The 1983 XJ6 had a 2WD drive-train, but a long list of advanced features ranging from rear window defroster, air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, cassette radio, moon-roof/sun-roof, power locks, down to power seats, alarm, power windows, and power steering.

The 1983 Jaguar XJ6 had few standard safety features, while the advanced stuff like disk breaking system, traction control, combination of airbags, and antiskid system were optional.

1982 Jaguar XJ6 Interiors & Performance

The interior region of the 1982 Jaguar Xj6 has gone subtle changes. On V12 versions a standard trip computer was provided for the very first time. Alloy wheels were designed with a number of characteristic circular holes, popularly called the “pepperpot” wheel.

1982 Jaguar XJ6

Coming to the mechanical parts of the 1982 jaguar xj6, it was provided with several choices of engines – 4.2L straight V6, 3.4L straight V6, and the 5.3L V12 engines. A Bosch fuel injection was incorporated in the bigger 6-cylinder and V12 versions, while the minor 6-cylinder engine was carbureted. In the U.S, the smaller version of the 3.4L 6-cylinder engine was not provided.

1982 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas

1982 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas was one of the special editions in the 1982 XJ6 lineup, which had added goodies, absent on the standard 1982 XJ models. As a whole, the 1982 Jaguar XJ6 was an excellent luxury saloon, and it paved the way to the popularity of the Jaguar vehicles, though it was a bit over-priced.

During 1960, Jaguar introduced its XJ6 model by using 6-cylinder versions of Jaguar’s repudiated 2 L (4235 cc/258 in³) and 2.8 L (2790 cc/170 cc inches) engine incorporated in the XL variant. Another important component carried forward in the 1972 Jaguar XJ6 from its earlier version was the IRS unit of Jaguar.

After improvising on the early productions, in 1972, Jaguar provided a 4.2 liter engine along with a Borg-Warner Model 12 unit to the Jaguar XJ6. This model had a larger wheelbase, and provided a marginal improvement in legroom for passengers in rear seats.

1972 Jaguar XJ6

Jaguar XJ12

After introducing the XJ6, Jaguar launched one more version under the label Jaguar XJ12 in the same year. The most impressive thing about this model was the sheer fact that it had a massive 5.3 L V12 engine. At that time, only this car was made with 12-cylinder engine, and provided with four doors.

1972 Jaguar XJ6 Review

The series-1 4.2 Litre xj6 cars were liked by most owners and they delivered a convincing fuel economy of 20 mpg in town. The 1996 Jaguar XJ6 was a luxurious and attractive sedan. The owners could drive this sedan for many years, if it maintained properly. It was a reliable vehicle and had good pickup along with great brakes. The positraction used in this car allowed the drivers to drive in all climatic conditions.

Changes in 1996 Jaguar XJ6

When you compare the 1996 XJ with its predecessors & other Jaguar cars, it had elegant exterior look, and the wooden seat trays were pretty handy. The 1996 Jaguar XJ6 became well known for its wooden steering and good audio system. It had nice aesthetics, though you had to pay a high price for it, as the vehicle had a hefty price tag of $35000!

1996 Jaguar XJ6 versus BMW 740i

In comparison to BMW 740i, the 1996 Jaguar XJ6 had better handling capacity and luxurious interior. Coming to its strengths, the 1996 model had greater rear leg room, bigger trunk wrapped with gorgeous leather and wood. It could attain the maximum speed of 220 km/h. The engine consumed 12 liters of fuel/100 kms of distance covered. It was a noise less car particularly when driven at high speeds. The spacious room in the cabin was exceptionally appreciated by tall passengers.

On the flip side, it was affected by throttle problem, and wrongly placed parking brakes. Handling was not better than 740i, and while driving the car in winter season, the tires were a bit unstable, which was its iggest disadvantage.
